MUP Episode 172 – Becoming a Believer

This episode Jon and Murph talk about what it means to “become a believer” in Call of Cthulhu 7th ed.

Keep your eyes peeled for Arkham Relic Hunt, coming to Kickstarter on May 2, 2019, from Squamous Studios. In this new tabletop card game, players are cultist acolyte in servitude to a dark god as they scour through the darkest corners of Arkham looking for relics and new initiates that must be delivered to the dark god.

Arkham Relic Hunt is a competitive card game for 2 – 4 cultists, designed by Damon Gregory. Acolytes gain points by moving through Arkham, discovering relics and new initiates for your order, casting spells, and sabotaging other players. The cultist with the most points, wins!

Type 40 have just released their third Kickstarter continuing with their theme of immersive props and in world artifacts.

This time round it is the Disk of R’lyeh from Chaosium’s Shadows of Yog-Sothoth! They have created two versions. A full sized , 12 inch, 14lbs disk, in three pieces of solid cast aluminium, anodised in antiqued gold and encrusted with glass gems.  And a tabletop version, 5inch, 2lb die cast nickel alloy version also in antiqued gold with glass gems.

Both look and feel exactly how you would expect an artifact if ancient evil to be and make wonderful in game props or mythos display pieces.

The Kickstarter runs for 21 days and was launched on the 5th May.

Campus Crier

The Campus Crier is Miskatonic U’s student paper. Here’s where we go through Mythos related news and feedback to the podcast. This episode was recorded on April 25, 2019.

In some show related news, We are now on Spotify! So please follow us there!

Jon has a new adventure available for purchase on the Miskatonic Repository, located within DriveThruRPG. It is called Of Wrath and Blood. This is actually an adventure I wrote back in 2010 for a contest on YSDC, (we’ve actually talked about it on the show last year). Well, I went through and tightened up my adventure, retitled it, and published it through the Miskatonic Repository. It’s only $5.00, and it’s filled with art and handouts. Please check it out.

Fred Hicks and Evil Hat Productions just launched their Fate of Cthulhu Kickstarter. From the Kickstarter, “The idea for Fate of Cthulhu started with a simple question: what if Cthulhu operated like Skynet? In this game you’ll face down Mythos-style threats with Terminator-style action and adventure, whether as a present-day Sarah Connor type, or an agent from the future already facing the creeping effects of corruption. This is Lovecraftian roleplaying made new again, with time-traveling operatives from a future apocalypse journeying back to the present day to warn others of the coming danger (and recruit them) to try to set the timeline on a new and hopefully better course.”

Goodman Games has a brand new Kickstarter that just launched today, April 25, 2019. Goodman Games is promoting their new system agnostic book, The Cthulhu Alphabet! This is the third book in their alphabet line; the first two being The Dungeon Alphabet, and The Monster Alphabet. I hope everyone checks out the Kickstarter and considers backing it. I am one of the contributing writers in this new alphabet book. I’ve seen a rough copy of the completed book, and it is absolutely amazing! It is filled with art!

Like the other alphabet books, The Cthulhu Alphabet book is chock-full of tables to spice-up your Lovecraftian game. There are tables that help the game master design a cult in just a few dice rolls. Or, helps generate some strange creatures indigenous to Ithaqua’s home realm. Or, a table that introduces several new masks for Nyarlathotep. Or, a huge table that describes various uses of the Voorish Sign. Check it out!

There has been an update to Golden Goblin’s Cathulhu Kickstarter. Oscar put up the update on April 25th after almost a month with no word on project. He says that Lisa Padol is two-thirds of the way through editing the three included scenarios and that art for the first scenario is in hand. Art for the second scenario has been assigned to artists David Lee Ingersoll. He apologizes for the delay cites the growing workload at GGP for the delay, mainly the Invictus scenario Fronti Nulla Fides, and the hobo themed book, Riding the Northbound.

Big news was announced from Chris Spivey and Darker Hue Studios as well. They announced a new horror themed western RPG called Haunted West. The game will feature a new system being developed by Spivey,  Ariel Celeste, Neall Raemonn Price, and Brennen Reece. Darker Hue is aiming for an early 2020 Kickstarter.

We want to encourage you, the listener, to join our Discord community. So we’re running a contest just for those folks on Discord. The Miskatonic University Podcast has a brand new copy of the Miskatonic University: The Restricted Collection Board Game available to give away.

Come to the MU_Podcast Discord server, and look for the “Contest_1” channel in the General Chat section. The way to enter the contest is to write a Lovecraftian or Cthulhu-esque haiku. You can enter as many times as you like. The contest ends on May 31, 2019. At which time, the MUP hosts will confer on their favorite haiku, and that individual shall win a copy the game.

Thank you to Max! For editing this episode.

From Mawdrigen: Hi there from sunny Goatswood (cough Caversham)! I have finally gotten caught up with the MUPodcast over the period of relocating the new cult headquarters. So many good things and really enjoying the various riffings on monsters and adventures. I want to run crooked and cracked manse now!

However that would be the purest insanity as I’ve only just completed the Cult of tea and dice play through of Horror on the Orient Express,a full 104 episodes of craziness. It has been a wild ride. ( )

We’re going to do a little post campaign dissection in the next few weeks!

Keep up the good work and keep inspiring maniacs like me! Go Pods!

Kind Regards

Mawdrigen of the cult of tea and dice

From Lee: Sorry to bother you guys but a new edition of Dark Conspiracy, one of my fave games, is being crowdfunded at the moment. Would you consider giving it a little plug either on the show or your social media channels? The new version is by Clockwork Publishing and is going for a more gritty and dystopic outlook compared to the original.

Graham1973: Look forward to that next episode. Enjoyed the bestiary segment, somewhere on project Gutenberg is an early 1900s collection of werewolf lore that is worth looking at if you want to avoid modern cliches. If I remember it correctly one of the ways listed in the book to become a werewolf is to drink from the wrong stream, no bites, no pain, just cool refreshing water.
