Cthulhu Dark game today!

Post by Dr. Gerard » Sat Apr 13, 2013 5:30 pm

Just gauging interest for a last-minute game -- anyone up for a Cthulhu Dark game starting around noon Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, April 14th?

I've had a long couple of weeks, and would love to squeeze in a playtest for something I'm running at a con in a couple of weeks.

Oh man, if I wasn't playing Call of Cthulhu tomorrow I totally would. I have been interested in Cthulhu Dark since the Borrowing Walmsley episode. If you don't get enough players for tomorrow, I would be interested on a different day.

How long does a game of Dark last? I've got other plans around 2:30, but I'd like to play.

I'd be down, if you've got the room... I'm assuming you've got pre-gens?

Scriven and Nvision -- great to have you on board!

Nvision, I'll post an intro to the scenario in a bit, but yes we basically have pregen roles in the story that we'll flesh out at the top of the game.

Jovial1, I was going to run this from 12:00 - 4:00 EST, though it could wrap up sooner than that. 2:30 sounds a bit constrained for this time around, but stay tuned -- I like running this system and plan to run more games in the future.

MrEben, I'll keep you in mind for next time!

In 1897, a family moves to an isolated village in the Scottish Borders. At first, it all seems so charming. The people of Cullingstone have few dealings with the outside world. They tell tales of Hobs Wood, where the fairies live. But the town is keeping a terrible secret. Soon after the new family arrives, the town’s cozy facade begins to crumble. The investigators, including members of our newly arrived family, will explore the weird undercurrents of this village, and likely discover things they’ll wish they could un-know. Players in this game will all contribute to a dark little tale of tragedy, mystery and horror.

This game will employ the Lovecraftian rules-lean system called Cthulhu Dark. There are no character sheets; all you need to start playing is a name and a profession. We’ll flesh out more details at the table. While I’m not exactly providing “pregens,” certain roles in the story need to be filled. We’ll need a married couple. Other good fits for the story include a school teacher, a physician, a groundskeeper, an auntie or a new police constable. Otherwise, character details will be up to the players, and we’ll start the session with a chat about who these people are and how they ended up in this ill-fated town at the edge of sanity.

That is some seriously cool cover art. I'm happy to play any of these roles - either partner of the married couple, doctor, teacher... whatever. Looking forward to it!

This was an absolute blast. Many thanks to everyone who played, and Dr. Gerard for running the game. It really drives home how well suited Cthulhu Dark can be to pick-up games with that distinctive, narrativist bent to them.
