Just pulled this from our Twitter feed -- pretty awesome story about a pretty awesome object. I've already been thinking about covering astrolabes from the Golden Age of the Muslim world. Would make a great game artifact. Expect a segment!

Hey there, NHHS folks --

If you haven't caught contest details in the show yet, just wanted to remind you that we're running a contest for the best 1950s-era history lecture idea. Winner gets their idea made into a segment and a physical copy of Atomic Age Cthulhu!

Just write up the idea in one or two paragraphs. I'll pick the top three of my favorites, and put finalists up for a community vote.

Anything with a tie to the 1950s that suggests something useful for keepers is game. Nonfiction, urban legends, rural legends, unexplained things, cryptozoology or just outright weirdness. Feel free to refurbish your own posts from this thread if it's 50s-germane.

100% fiction or direct copy-paste from other authors need not apply.

Submission deadline is midnight EST on Sunday, June 9th. Only two more days!

We've only had a couple of them come in so far (thanks to you, a couple of people), so don't hesitate!

That's one that could be a good conversation with a lot of alleged sightings. There are some other stories that I grew up hearing in the area, but there's nothing really documented for them. Chain gang workers dragging a chain down the road and such. Legends of werewolves are big in eastern KY. Creatures drawing people into the woods and these people not being seen again. Old Cherokee legends and such. This one though is by far one of the best documented.

I have for a long time found the Mothman to be fascinating. Not the movies based on this myth so much though. They are quite lame.

Just got back from a hike up to the top of a local mountain and the series of cliffs that look out onto the valley below. They are noteable because they are the reputed local home of the thunderbird. No doubt he used to fish for sturgeon in the huge lake that was drained in the 1920s. These critters are said to be the cause of thunder and lightening, and have tales in some cultures of battling a serpant/lizard race that came from the sea.

I took some audio when I was up there but do not like my spiel on the critter. I will have to try harder.

Just heard about the goblin tunnels of Barvaria. Strange tunnels running below the surface and dating from the middle ages. Known as Erdstall tunnels there are over 1200 known. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erdstall
