East Coast Suggestions?

Post by caddy1071 » Tue Apr 28, 2015 5:14 am

Hi all! Hey, just thought I'd inquire with the history nuts on the East Coast to see if they have any suggestions for sites for a few trips I'm going on this year. Not sure if I'll get any hits, but thought I'd try and see if any historic and weird sites came out of it. :)

Going to Atlantic City for a long weekend this weekend - looks like there are a few tours and I'm seeing and interesting site (The Atlantic City Experience - http://www.atlanticcityexperience.org/) - any suggestions?

Going to Boston for a tech conference in June - had the opportunity for 2 days of pre-travel, so I took it! :) I know there is going to be a TON to see in Boston - any notables for HPL adepts?

Finally, making Necronomicon 2015 this year (as a few MUP folk seem to be making the trek) - any suggestions for Providence?

I'll post some of my findings as I go along here - just thought I'd crowd source any East Coasters/documentarians that may have some cool spots of interest to check out!

Thanks, all!

This site might help - lists some locations in most (if not all) of those places.

Hi! Just a follow up - some cool things I've seen in Boston - not covering the typical Freedom Trail areas (for the most part) since they are well tread, but some really cool stuff in Boston. Boston ROCKS for history buffs - amazing city on all counts!

The Prudential Tower Skywalk - GREAT place to start - beautiful view of the city and get your bearings, audio tour points out places of interest for further exploration - great investment of a couple of hours.

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the- ... -scientist (Right next door to the Prudential Skywalk - very nice and huge reflecting pool - the 1906 church is just beautiful to behold.)

Boston Public Library - architecture and art there is amazing. Map room in the back past the courtyard was pretty neat too - tons of maps of Boston as it grew. :p

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-boston-stone (Kinda cool little oddity tucked away - "oldest taverns in Boston" surround it if you want to have a drink and enjoy their dubious claims. ;) Bell in Hand and the Green Dragon.)

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/georges-island (Saw this on Trip Advisor as "Fort Warren" - I probably won't get to it, but sounds phenomenal. :p Bring a flashlight - you can walk the entire complex, even the dark bowels. :P Pretty sweet.)

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/copp ... ing-ground (Tomb of the Mather family - 'nough said. :) )

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/edga ... poe-square and http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/th ... ry-statues (Pretty cool EAP statue on the street near the burrito joint (open late, btw ;) ) opposite Boston Common at this area)
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/ether-monument (very cool monument in the Boston Public Garden - I'm pretty taken by it. The Washington sculpture in the middle of the Garden is incredible, too :) )

A walk down Commonwealth Street is nice - the affluent houses of Back Bay (1800's?), tree lined walk with a bunch of cool sculptures - another personal favorite. :) It's just west of the Public Garden.

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/trem ... le-dickens (Right around East Boston Common - the Granary Burial Ground is kittycorner, King's Chapel is down the Street and on the way to the Old State House and Faneuil Hall - all recommended :) Boston Stone is just down the street from Fanieul Hall)

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/ancient-crypt (Anglicans buried in the basement of Old North Church)

A couple of other places of interest in Boston:
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/steinert-hall (Near Boston Common)
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/ether-dome (North of Beacon Hill - weird medical museum of possible interest)
