Recommended Movies

Post by trevlix » Wed Dec 18, 2013 4:49 pm

With the holiday break approaching, I'm going to have some time to watch movies that I normally don't. I plan on watching a few I just haven't been able to yet (Pan's Labyrinth is at the top of my list), but wanted to solicit any recommendations. Doesn't have to be Lovecraftian/horror - any genre is fine.

I just watched a great little film on Netflix the other day, called "Grabbers." It's got blood sucking, tentacled beasts from out of the deep besieging a small Irish island town...and their only salvation lies in the local pub!

Let The Right One In is one of my more recent favorites. 30 days of night is good fun. The Strangers, if only for its soundtrack by tomandandy. Also The Ruins for a surprisingly competent take on a classic slasher formula.

"Only Yesterday" from Studio ghibli. Utterly beautiful, though not exactly a barrel of laughs.
"Kung Pow: Enter The Fist". Frequently hilarious.
"I'm A Cyborg". Delightfully fun and provocative.
"The General", from Buster Keaton. In my opinion, the most brilliant film ever made - it makes "Citizen Kane" look like an ill-conceived, pretentious, first year film-school project.

Wow...lots of great movies. I've seen some, but that doesn't mean I can't watch them again! :)

Sorry, I can't watch this one. I read the excellent novel right before the movie came out, and when I found out they changed the ending I was extremely turned off. If you haven't read the novel by Scott Smith, I highly recommend it.

Oh no! You did it backwards! Watching a movie before reading the source material usually causes less disappointment, and even more love of the novel. That being said, I'd second the recommendation for Let the Right One In. It's a surprisingly good adaptation (Lindqvist wrote the screenplay himself), though the book fills in little bits of backstory that are only hinted at in the film.

Have I mentioned The Burrowers? I can't imagine you've missed it, but if you have please add to the list.

Sorry Ruins is ruined for you. I'm very curious about the ending now.

Check out the original first if possible. Both versions have unique strengths, but the Swedish one captures something especially haunting about Scandinavian isolation.
