Music For Lovecraftians

Post by mrjohnmarchughes » Tue Dec 03, 2013 10:10 am

I don't think this subject has ever been raised before; if it has, I apologise.
Does anyone have any suggestions for genuinely creepy, genuinely good, music? Music that has an obvious Lovecraftian flavour?
The only album I can think of, that I would recommend, is "Snailface II", by the band Snailface. It was originally offered gratis, but now, I think, some money is required.
I don't normally like this type of power-down-tuned metal (or whatever it's called), and, honestly, the band's other recordings didn't exactly delight me; but this album - Snailface II - is simply brilliant, and occasionally truly unsettling: I can't recommend it highly enough.
Any other suggestions?

Well, I've got a playlist of the stuff somewhere. I listen to creepy horror movie score/soundtrack music almost exclusively while I work. I made a Google spreadsheet that we can add stuff to if we get some responses in this thread.

I will link to it later when I'm not limited by my phone.

My top pick for artist would be Bernard Hermann.

I'm less savvy about metal and other hard edged stuff, though in my previous life I enjoyed the Bauhaus, the Fields of Nephilim, the Killing Joke, The Misfits, the Joy Division and such.

Here's a link to the Google doc which is open for anyone to edit. Please add genre tags and links to samples of the music if any are available.

You can't go wrong with Ennio Morricone's soundtrack from "The Thing." Also, try any of Akira Yamaoka's soundtracks from Silent Hill.

I just listened to the Dreams in the Witch House rock opera today. Wicked awesome! I love concept albums, like Queenryche's Operation: Mindcrime. And Dreams in the Witch House did not disappoint.

Check this review!

One that I have to mention is "Necronomicon" by Nox Arcana... Nox Arcana stuff in general is great but they have a whole album of Lovecraftian goodness. Midnight Syndicate is another great selection. Then depending on what you are going for soundtracks for different movies with the sound and mood you are going for are a lot of what I pick to have going on around the table when I'm behind the screen.

Going way back in time and raising this thread from the dead... Today I had on a random stream on Spotify and I noticed a curious song title and band name. "A Mountain Walked or Stumbled" by Necronomikids was on a compilation of monster-themed surf-core. Their Bandcamp page is here: https://necronomikids.bandcamp.com/

While not specifically horror, Daikaiju is another excellent genre surf band: http://www.daikaiju.org/

All good choices so far, also would put in the work by Chad Fifer who did some work for the H.P. Lovecraft Literary podcast but recently got out on Chaosium the album Sense Impacts.

Also if you don't already have Darkest of the Hillside Thickets on your music player, you might have to get that.

With Nox Arcana, I'd call out the other one that started or influenced them, Midnight Syndicate.
