Great question, Canageek, and the answer is that you absolutely can use creative commons material if the license allows derivatives, which sounds like the case here. And you can absolutely use MUP audio if you want some chatty background.

Contestants are encouraged to play with and incorporate rights-free audio from around the web. The site Freesound.org has some amazing sound effects and field recordings to work with. I used hundreds of sounds from that site to make history segments. We only need to make sure to attribute everything fully. Archive.org and Wikimedia also have great stuff to work with.

Please also remember that layers of sound or hi-tech editing are not required. A good piece of prose read with no frills into a microphone could easily be a winner.

Can't wait to hear what you come up with! I hesitate to state any guesses publicly, but this talk of tones has me speculating...

I want to add that I / we will help all contestants with things like how to attribute creative commons audio or with technical issues as they pop up. You can think of this thread as a support forum and a workshop for ideas. All of us hosts like to play with sound, and love to help others see how much fun it is.

Getting jazzed for submissions!

Helloooo

I have a one minute audio file (.wav) ready to send you. I've used a couple of sound effects from Freesound, so what info do you need to ensure correct attribution?

Woohoo! So glad to hear that.

All you need to do for stuff from Freesound is send us a link to the download page for each sound that you use. If we have a link to the page, we can track down details for proper attribution, so don't worry about it. In fact, that's all you need to do for any open license sounds you use. Whether you're using Kevin MacLeod's music website or archive.org, just send us the URL and we'll track everything down. In fact, I hasten to say I'd relish that task.

But if you're just curious about how to do it in general, below are some attributed examples from my own Freesound account (which says I have downloaded 498 sounds since 2011). I'm not bothering to hyperlink here, but usually the name of the sound is linked to the file page and the user name is hyperlinked to the creator's page.

I'm striving to get something done in the eleventh hour, to ensure you've got some extra content! Trying to do a decent reading and keep it within one minute is challenging...

It is. I used to do news spots for NPR that were about 120 words in 45 seconds, if that is a helpful gauge.

Wasn't going to submit something, but got an idea. If I can pull it off you'll get a submission from me today!

Question - it is up to 1 minute, right? We won't get penalized if it comes in at something like 45 seconds?
