I like TAK's idea. If you get a Jenga Tower do Hasbro as the grooves are all a bit different. Some of the special ones are too flat and as a result people can pull 40 or more of the 52 blocks before they collapse. Most groups typically do mid 20s to lower 30s per collapse.

It works great for tension but you have to pace it properly. If it collapses late and there won't be enough pulls for the climax have a bunch pulled out beforehand to rev it up. Remember, it's all about tension.

Totally worth trying the marked Jenga pieces idea. One complication is the lower part of the tower tends to fall almost intact, with pieces leaning on each other instead of flat.
