Re: MUP 59 – Build a Better Rat Trap...
Rat Things can be dangerous if used with care. They are, after all, intelligent. I remember running a campaign where the players had kidnapped a "modern-day" (1920s) witch. Her familiar was a Rat Thing, so the animal chewed through the brake cable of the player's car. They decided that they needed t...

Re: MU Podcast 047 - Starting 2014 the Hite way
As far as Chaosium game canon, in 1987 the company released a Miskatonic U Graduate Kit , authored by Sandy Petersen and Lynn Willis, that includes a bumper sticker of the Fighting Cephalapod as the university mascot, and the phrase "Go 'Pods!" It was a monograph that amounted to a collection of pr...

Re: Smarter Than Human
I think there are two parts to this: what we might call "reputation" and "action". "Reputation" is the easy one: If I have a character who is a brain surgeon, I, the Keeper, don't need to know how to perform brain surgery to play the part. I just have to give the impression I can. In terms of aliens...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god
Sound like you've got things well under control and worked out. The idea that Von Smitt is is testing himself agains clever people is certainly an interesting option. I don't think I'd advise this as a general tactic: the problem with Super-Geniuses are that the Keeper needs to be pretty bright too ...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god
I wasn't relly saying that the main villian had to be a god, rather that the source of the power need not be spelled out in clear cut terms. While you should have some idea what the being is, the players don't need to know they've just defeated Nyarlathotep (or whoever). I like all the stuff you are...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god
My advice is don't worry about who the god is: my feeling, reading it, was an avatar of Hastur, but who is to say that one of Shub-Niggurath's children doesn't like clockwork, or that there is a figure, an immortal sorcerer, like the Celestial Toymaker from Doctor Who , who passes the millenia by pl...

Re: MU Podcast 048 - The Con in Yellow
Another great podcast, guys. The history of the Hastur Myth Cycle got a little confused, although the major points where all there: Bierce invented the names, Carcosa ("An Inhabitant of Carcosa"), Hastur ("Hiati The Shepherd"), Hali (as a person) and a couple of others. Chambers took these names and...

Nice podcast.
I believe The Cephalopods were originally the University swimming team (my memory suggests that the Miskatonic U Graduation Kit was first to mention them). I have seen reference to them being the rowing team. That they are connected to water makes more sense.

As a further heads-up, I've spotted a Robert E. Howard centred podcast (although it seems to have just widened its remit) call the Cromcast ( http://thecromcast.blogspot.co.uk/ ). Three newbies to Howard review his fiction in much the same style as The Double Shadow and H.P.Lovecraft Literary Podcas...
