What makes a railroad?

I try and write my own scenarios as often as possible, I enjoy telling a good story. My problem is that too often I worry that I'm railroading my investigators. They're all very new to RPGing so I think they haven't felt railroaded as the structure helped guide them on. My question is: what makes a ...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god

Thank you Eibon I've really appreciated this whole exercise.a lot of it's happened quite organically so being pushed on the details is wonderful. I've really enjoyed being able to discuss this. As a Keeper it can be lonely as the people you might turn to for this kind of discussion are playing the g...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god

Hi thanks for the response. Von Smitt to my mind, its the challenge, Tick Tock Man offers him new designs new ways to take his natural genius and to take it further. Its not just a matter of being the best its remaining the best. His dreams offered him insights for him to channel his ability but tea...

Re: new keeper needing advice

It won't do much if a cultist blasts him with a shotgun! There's a good chance mythos monsters will be scared but look at other threats. Cultists, booby traps, human error and even something that obscures or changes the sign e.g the tattooed individual is climbing through caves and fails a climb rol...

Re: Am I too squeamish for Call of Cthulhu?

From my point of view, my group are all Christians so while they appreciate horror and that horrible things will happen, I have to look at where my line is. It's ok to suggest, in fact for me that's more fun, let their imagination fill in the blanks. It makes for effective horror. I have gory moment...

Re: Am I too squeamish for Call of Cthulhu?

I'm funny about that too. I'm starting to write more of my own stuff and find me shaping the adventures to exclude a lot of that. Shape it how you want it to be, the material is elastic enough to fit what you need it to.

Re: Keeper help: need a good god

Funny you should say "The House that Jack Built", that was bouncing round my head while I was doing it. My investigators are part of an investigation firm and had previously met an academic on their last adventure. He is worried as one of his colleagues has received an invite and was all guns ablazi...

Re: Keeper help: need a good god

Hmmm maybe should rethink not using Narly if it was your first thought as well. My players are new enough that he will still be an unknown quantity. Just they've come out of Return of the Hound, and I was tempted to use someone different but the Tick Tock Man fits in really quite well.

Keeper help: need a good god

So I'm putting together a story for next week which goes a little something like this: Toymaker Kurtis Von Smitt's reputation for clockwork toys is second to none. His toys are intricate and the range of movements are limited only by his imagination. His brilliance makes him sought after, but not ju...
