Episode 56 - The Shadow Out of Time

Post by Paul Fricker » Tue Jul 07, 2015 7:29 pm

This is a pretty mind-blowing story. Not so much for the overview, which is quite straightforward, but for all the details and elements that one can discuss and explore. I feel like we only scratched the surface - let us know what you think.

I really liked the episode gents. I think my favorite part is on the "meeting of the minds" lol, when the possessed parties' brains are in the Yithians. So cool having these historical and alien beings all equally powerless to their 'captors'.

I think you did good. You were quite thorough within the format. I'm really glad there'll be more next time though, as I really like your thoughts on how to use it in gaming.

I suppose one way could be to have the investigators start the game in physical therapy, and in the same group therapy for amnesia and atypical psychosis. Really play up their physical problems and lack of network (their colleagues and family having disowned them). All they have is each other.
Their few memories involve innocent tings, like reading a book, looking at a night sky, or having a conversation with... someone. Only problem is the physical side of these memories are off. Their head is in an impossible angle as they read, their means of locomotion feels off (but smoother than the stumbling around they're capable of now), Their body in relation to other objects makes them feel enormously tall etc. Later, as they deal with their missing time, the more conclusive memories surface. They remember that the conversation happened through the medium of tapping claws together, they used tendrils next to their eyes to turn pages, they had no legs.
At the same time they discover ticket stubs, strange items on their bank statements, an entomological collection The players will be ahead of their investigators, but the gradual discovery and their unfamiliarity with their bodies could still make for an interesting game.

Here's another Yithian in the popular media (though they got the trumpet limb wrong) - one of the many aliens of Futurama:

He's quite cute. Probably wishes he'd splurged on a bespoke tux.

Clearly great minds think alike Tore! Although in this context minds thinking alike seems somehow sinister.

I've not watched Futurama, but that looks awesome! I'll mention it to Matt, who I'm sure is a fan of the show.

Oh Paul, you haven't seen Futurama? Tsk.

Any of you fellows going to be at Necronomicon next month?

Futurama - there are so many things about me that I need to set right - watching Futurama is just another one on a long list.

Gencon - yes indeed, Matt will be there. Indeed he is demo-ing games for Chaosium and running a number of other things. He is also on a podcast panel. We really ought to post some details about that - I'll message him and make it so. Sadly neither Scott nor I will make it this year. What about you?

Going to Necronomicon next month, but not GenCon.
I managed to get into Mike Mason's "Force of Will" CoC game on Sunday, so happy for that. Hope he runs it with 7e.
